Amtrak along Puget Sound
Author: seod

I went to Steilacoom,WA along Puget Sound to get some Amtrak trains before they change over to the Lakewood route. I really like the scenery along the sound but it is not long for the Amtrak world. The pictures here were all taken on Sunday the 15th.

#1 AMTK 175 with a Northbound train #516 with the Pierce County Ferry M.V. Christine Anderson in the background.

#2 AMTK 90250 with south bound #507 (the Seahawk unit) at Pioneer from the pedestrian bridge at Chambers Creek park

#3 AMTK 468 with NB train #516 at the southern edge of Steilacoom next to a burned out marina

Scott

P.S. I went mainly because the weather report said rain pretty much until the end of the month so I better get some pics before the deluge starts.

Part 2 of Amtrak in the Steilacoom area.

#4 just at sunset I got the on time northbound Coast Starlight #14 with AMTK 18 - 198 at Solo Point going under the gravel barge loading facility.

the next ones were all taken on Monday the 16th.

#5 AMTK 90251 with SB #513 crossing bridge 14 at West Tacoma just north of Steilacoom

#6 AMTK 470 with NB #504 crossing the bridge just south of the ferry terminal.

The last of Monday the 16th pictures.

#7 AMTK 90252 - 90253 on the rear end of AMTK 470 NB #504 crossing the bridge just south of the ferry terminal.

#8 AMTK 90230 with SB #507 at the park at the southern part of Steilacoom.

#9 AMTK 175 NB #516 at Days Island near dusk.

Well I saw some good Amtrak trains along the water and had a fairly warm sunny 2 afternoon's.

There are several Image Of The Day candidates in this series of photos.

Thank you for sharing.

And not a single garbage truck cab car in the batch. Well done, and nice pics!

Pics #1 and #9 had Mater on the end I just did not post them. I really don't mind Mater it is odd looking but it is something different.

I think that the caption for pic#4, the sunset shot, should read "northbound " #14 Coast Starlight!
Great photos! I am trying to find time to take a train or two along there myself, before the route change. If I recall that takes place sometime in December?

Scott, nice stuff! We drove by the new Amtrak route over the weekend. It sure has a lot of grade crossings!

What are the structures in picture number 2 (Chambers Creek park)? One looks like a Roman ruin, while others look like Druid standing stones. Is this an attempt (like the Stonehenge replica in Maryhill, Washington) to bring ancient England to the Pacific Northwest?

That is known as the "Narrows"

It's a shame that Amtrak will be moving off that scenic line.

That's the remains of a bigger than huge quarry. Those were structures for sorting/categorizing and storing various sizes/grades of rock.

Thanks Starlight rider. It is northbound and I know it but I did not type it. Just a basic brain f**t. I know I will have to try and ride along the sound before the switch.

Scott, Thanks so much for these wonderful shots that remind the rest of us how beautiful this area is. Will definitely miss traveling that way on my next trip. TRG

I was on board the train in picture #2, enjoying a glass of wine with my wife, taking in what is likely our last trip on the alignment by the Sound. Could not have asked for a better day!

Thanks for the pix, especially the sleep apnea reference in #5, "NO WAKE ZONE."
