Trust...
Author: CGTower

We hear a lot about how PTC will prevent collisions and such, but, a lot of it goes back to trust. Trust the men and women of the railroad have for one another in an environment where one mistake could change lives forever.

Photo 1: In the thick morning fog of a mid August day, CSX train Q142 slowly enters the siding at Wapakoneta, Ohio. Ahead of him in this siding is a stopped empty iron ore train, K172. The stack cars quietly drift through the switch and past the color positon light signal. K172's crew was in constant contact with Q142's crew so they knew their every action as they wait for a southbound train.

Photo 2: The DPU for Q142 rumbles past just as a triangular set of headlights appear out of the fog. The southbound, K421, acknowledged the head end of K172 and also the crew of the Q142.

Photo 3: With everyone safely past each other, K421 throttles up and heads south toward Cincinnati.

These moments occur daily on our railroads in all kinds of weather conditions. Despite the technology, the trust factor can never be ignored.

I like photo 2. I'm glad folks take photos on this type of day. It has a certain aura that just another sunshiney shot does not.

I heartily agree onthe photos; however, this was not under PTC; note old-style CPL signals.

Actually, this whole line is PTC. Do not let the CPL's fool you. The urban myth that old signals do not work with PTC is incorrect. PTC is a layered system, it augments what is there. So, with that said, the entire Toledo Subdivision is PTC equipped.

Trust is huge, for sure, but communication, which is becoming a lost art in society, is a huge part of moving freight safely, too.  Great photographs of trust and communication at work.

You struck the proverbial nail right on the head with that one, sir!
