A day on the Albany and Eastern Railroad

Hello All,

Continuing with photos from my trip out west in 2018.

On the morning of September 20, 2018 I arrived in Albany Oregon around 7 am. Upon arrival, I found Albany and Eastern locomotives 1807 and 1841 behind the gate in their yard.  After about 30 minutes a crew was on board and ready to depart for the UP yard in Albany Oregon. The train would switch cars in Albany before going to the UP for interchange.  After making their pickup the train headed back switching a customer along the way.

The train then headed to Lebanon Oregon with 5 empty centerbeam flat cars. After switching cars they ran the empty cars up to Weyerhaeuser in Lebanon. The train then continued to WPK in Sweet Home Oregon and picked up 5 loaded wood chip hoppers. They would head back to Albany and drop off the wood chip cars.
Next the crew would run a cut of empty log cars out to the log loadout in Crabtree Oregon.  They would return to Albany with the loaded log cars.

Here are the photos from my visit.

1. Albany and Eastern 1807 and 1841 head eastbound after picking up cars from the Union Pacific at Albany Oregon

2. Another shot of Albany and Eastern 1807 and 1841 heading eastbound at Albany Oregon

3. Albany and Eastern 1807 and 1841 pass a grassy field on their way east at Albany Oregon

I hope everyone enjoys the photos.

Thanks for the photos!  I know paint doesn't pull the train, but it is nice to see a shortline with freshly painted power in a scheme other than G&W orange (and on something other than spartan cab EMD's).

Are the two GEs back from Coos Bay Rail now, so matched sets can once again happen?

The word from a WSJ newspaper article is that lumber prices are near an all-time high, due to very high demand.  Part of that demand is from people staying at home, and tackling home projects (fences, porches, etc.).  It was reported that many lumber yards are running low on basic stock, and literally begging the mills for lumber loads.  Thus, this is very god for railroads like the Albany & Eastern and the mills it serves.  Lumber futures are also near an all-time high right now.

None of this was expected, so it's definitely a bright spot in the COVID-affected economy, and very good for rural people working in the lumber industry.

Awesome shots! I like the paint scheme, very nice. I also like the looks of the FB2 trucks, they look good on those GE's. And take notice of all the empty centerbeam cars, not one of them the ground, good job A&E...  :) !!
