Loram Rail Grinder-In the Dark and Snow
Author: PC1073

While I've seen this thing working on a few occasions in the daylight, I'd never managed to photograph it in the dark.
Thanks to the usual CSX shenanigans, it finally happened.  Seen here passing SEPTA's Cheltenham Station (off
to the left in hte 1st image), they're working along the CSX Trenton Sub., around MP QA 9.7, in Philadelphia Pa.

Enjoy,
John R

Great photos of one of my favorite operations on the RR. Do you know where is is now? My favorite picture is #1.
Thanks, Tim McRea

Thanks for the memories.  My parents lived in the Cheltenham Station Apartments, about 200 feet east of the station in Philadelphia, '92 - '96.  The old RDG statoin, which burned down in late '92 or early '93 was in Cheltenham, PA, to the left side of your first picture.  Gerry

Do the rail grinders grind turnouts or do they avoid them?

Normally they will skip turnouts. There is a much smaller machine that is designed to grind turnouts.

This great image is far , far superior in quality to how it looked posted on Facebook.  It really drives home what happens to the quality of the   images  and videos one uploads there.  Great shot !
