Amtrak Downeaster Schedule Change Forges Ahead

Operators of Amtrak's Downeaster hope a change in operating times will make the service more convenient for passengers.

Officials say the last train from Boston to Portland will leave an hour earlier - at 10:20 p.m. every day instead of 11:15 - starting April 26.

But the region's most vocal train advocacy group worries that the changing the times will actually make rail service less convenient for Mainers who want to attend nighttime cultural or sporting events in Boston.

TrainRiders Northeast had urged the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority not to make the change. The last northbound train of the day now arrives in Portland at 2 a.m.
