CN Bala Sub Derailment Hampered Freight, Passenger Ops

A Canadian National Railway derailment on the company's Bala Subdivision on Sunday, February 29, disrupted freight and passenger train traffic through Monday. At approximately 01:10 EDT on Sunday, CN train M45061-29 derailed three cars at milepost 38.74 in Newmarket, Ontario.

The derailment consisted of two cars hauling sulfuric acid and a third with metal ingots. The single track route was blocked by the derailed cars and some trackage damaged. There were no injuries reported in the derailment and crews converged on the site all day Sunday with efforts to restore the route by Monday.

VIA Rail and Ontario Northland passenger trains were suspended past the site on Sunday and Monday. ONR's Northlander trains 697 and 698 were replaced by buses between North Bay and Toronto both days. VIA Rail bused passengers around the site on its Canadian trains 1 and 2.

Rail service returned to the route by 18:00 EDT on Monday evening and passenger service was expected to be restored today.
