KCS Train Struck by Motorist, Ensuing Fire Forced Evacuations

A man was killed in Bossier City this morning when he drove his car into a moving freight train.

The car, which burst into flames, was well back in the train and it was dragged about three miles before the engineer was alerted about what happened. The car was under tanker cars and residents on one street were briefly evacuated until the fire was extinguished. There was no explosion.

The accident happened shortly before 5 a.m. on Shed Road near Interstate 220. The road was blocked for several hours.

Police said the driver, whose name had not been released this morning, drove under the 29th car of the Kansas City Southern train. It was wedged under the train and dragged down the track.

The train engineer was unaware he was dragging the burning car until passersby called police, who alerted the railroad. The train stopped between Benton Road and Airline Drive with the car still on fire and wedged under a tanker car.

Residents in the 1600 block of Leslie Street, located between Airline Drive and Benton Road, were evacuated because the flaming automobile was under tanker cars. The cars turned out to be empty.

"I was fixing my coffee and I looked out the back window and I thought my back yard was on fire," said Lonnie Lonadier. "Come to find out, there was a car up under a train. It was terrible, terrible."

The train was headed from Shreveport to Minden. KCS said it tested the railroad crossing lights and said they were working.
