CSXT Friday Derailment Cleared by Weekend

Traffic was flowing again Saturday on Ga. 60 (Candler Highway) between Tanners Mill Road and Belmont Highway near the Hall and Jackson County line.

Meanwhile, investigation was continuing into Friday's train derailment that forced the traffic detour. Seven freight cars and a locomotive near the front of a 54-car CSX train overturned in a curve about 14:40 EDT Friday.

Adam Hollingsworth, CSX spokesman, said crews completed the cleanup about midnight Friday and "trains are back operational on the line." Hollingsworth said preliminary reports indicated diesel fuel had ignited when it came in contact with the engine's electrical system after the derailment.

Hall County firefighters battled a blaze in the locomotive for several hours.

Five of overturned freight cars were loaded with grain, about 700 tons of which spilled down an embankment away from the highway. The other two cars were empty.
