BNSF Minnesota Coal Train Derailment Cleared

A BNSF coal train derailment near Manley, Minnesota has closed Highway 17 in Rock County on Wednesday, but has since been cleared.

Officials say the BNSF train tracks between Hills and Manley split several times. 18 of the 130 cars derailed and 16 spilled.

BNSF officials are trying to determine what caused the derailment. Residents in the area say crews are frequently working on this stretch of track. Trudy Vanderburg, the owner of Manley Tire & Oil, commented, "I've usually been pretty impressed because of the amount of trains that go through here and the size and when you have a fully loaded train full of coal, that's a lot of weight. So I'm sure they're pretty concerned about keeping the track up themselves."

The train cars were being removed from the tracks and the line was to have been reopened on Thursday.
