NICTD Derailment that Injured Crew is Under Investigation

Two cars of a four-car South Shore Line train derailed just west of South Bend and disrupted service east of Michigan City on Saturday.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District manager Jerry Hanas said no one was hurt in the 04:50 EST accident on a curve 2-1/2 miles west of the line's Michiana Regional Airport terminal.

Because of the damage to the train and tracks, riders were being bused the 30 miles between Michigan City and South Bend.

Hanas said the train's two-member crew was deadheading a locomotive and train into the South Bend terminal to begin the day's operation. They were taken to Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Both crew members were undergoing Federal Railroad Administration-mandated drug and alcohol testing.

"We have three areas we're looking at, the track, mechanical and human error. We investigate each of those separately and we put them together to figure out what may have occurred," said Robert Byrd of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.

Hanas said he expected full service to be restored in time for the Monday morning rush hour.

About 3.6 million passengers a year ride the South Shore the 75 miles between South Bend and Chicago. Weekday ridership averages about 12,700.
