NTSB Reccomendations Incorporated into Senate Bill

Recommendations from a federal study on the deadly 2002 train derailment near Minot are being incorporated into a railroad bill in the US Senate.

The National Transportation Safety Board released the results of its two-year federal investigation of the derailment last month.

The agency issued seven recommendations to the Federal Railroad Administration -- calling on officials to study older rail cars and develop standards for new tank car construction.

Senator Byron Dorgan says he has added the NTSB's recommendations to this year's Rail Transportation Security Act.

The bill was passed by a Senate committee last week. Dorgan says the improvements are needed right away.

Federal safety investigators concluded that the derailment of a Canadian Pacific Railway train was caused by inadequate track maintenance and inspections. C-P Rail officials have denied that.

The derailment sent a cloud of poisonous farm fertilizer over a part of Minot, killing one and injuring hundreds.
