NS Asks for Bigger Tax Break Around Hollidaysburg, PA Property

The property where the former Conrail (ex-Pennsylvania Railroad) Hollidaysburg Car Shop sits in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, is a designated Keystone Opportunity Zone which gives a tax break to the railroad.

Norfolk Southern has asked Blair County for permission to designate the remainder of the railyards as a KOZ . The opportunity zone takes taxes from the County for a ten year period, and Blair County wants to re-examine that loss.

Commissioner John Eichelberger says, "I would like to see the railroad, in good faith to the community give us a voluntary payment because of their tax benefit that they have, so that the school district & County retain some income from that parcel."

The County is concerned that if the business doesn't have any taxes to pay that they will have no incentive to sell the land.
