CSXT Syracuse, NY Derailment Still Being Cleared

A CSX Transportation derailment in the Central Square neighborhood of Syracuse, New York, on Saturday kept clean-up crews busy through early Monday morning.

Twenty-eight freight cars on CSXT train Q620-18 derailed Saturday afternoon around 15:00 EDT in the populated Central Square area. SXT spokesman Robert Sullivan said at least 15 of the cars were put back on the tracks Sunday and that work would continue overnight. He said the last cars to be re-railed would be the four carrying chlorine and two carrying sodium hydroxide. Both are considered hazardous chemicals.

The rail company hoped to have all the cars back on track or removed today, Sullivan said. "They want to do it as quickly as they can . . . but the real focus is on getting this resolved safely," he said.

The 122-car train originated in Montreal and was headed for Selkirk, near Albany, when it derailed. No injuries were reported.

Sullivan said the company has begun an investigation. The Federal Railroad Administration also is investigating, said Steve Kulm, an FRA spokesman.

One of the cars carrying sodium hydroxide began to leak overnight but was contained safely, said Terry Bennett, a spokeswoman for the Oswego County Emergency Management Office. She said an air monitoring team did not detect any releases. The remaining sodium hydroxide was removed from the tank Sunday, she said.

Sodium hydroxide is a corrosive, odorless solid used in a variety of industrial and commercial products, including drain and oven cleaners.

None of the homes near the derailment were evacuated, although Central Square school buses were on standby if the need arose. Ambulance crews from Southern Oswego Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Northern Oswego County Ambulance, McFee and Menter also were on hand at various times, Bennett said.
