MRL Derailment Cleared in Laurel, MT

Montana Rail Link trains began rolling again over the company's mainline Sunday morning after five covered hoppers had derailed and spilled corn in Laurel, Montana on Saturday.

According to MRL spokeswoman Lynda Frost, the five-car derailment spilled tons of corn on East Main Street in Laurel and shut down the company's main line. By Sunday afternoon, most of the corn had been cleaned up. Crews are expected to be on the scene for several more days clearing away the remaining debris, Frost said.

The preliminary cause of the derailment is a broken rail, Frost said. Further details are expected in the coming days.

The accident happened around 03:00 MDT Saturday in front of the Laurel Ridge Motel and closed about four blocks of East Main.
