Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr train no. 6 collided with the truck in Grand County, Utah, some twenty-five miles west of the Colorado border. The truck driver was killed instantly and the lead locomotive of the passenger train derailed in the collision.

Of the 119 passengers traveling from the San Francisco Bay Area to Denver and Chicago, two reported minor injuries. Neither was life threatening according to Amtrak. None of the crew was hurt in the collision.

Delays of several hours were expected on the line as crews worked to rerail the lead Amtrak locomotive and clear the wreckage of the truck.
