CSXT Ohio Derailment, Bridge Collapse Reported

A CSX Transportation derailment just outside Marietta, Ohio has deposited eight cars of coal on Virginia Street, where a bridge once stood.

According to CSXT, at least eight cars loaded with coal derailed at approximately 02:00 EST this morning. The train was carrying loaded coal hoppers and no hazardous materials were said to be involved. There were also no injuries reported in the early morning mishap.

The train was bound from Parkersburg, West Virginia for American Electric Power-Muskingum power plant at Beverly, Ohio with ninety loaded coal hoppers at the time of the derailment. It is not clear whether the bridge gave way under the train or if the derailment caused the bridge to collapse. Vehicular traffic is typically non-existent at the hour of night the derailment occurred, however traffic problems were expected this morning in Marietta.

There is no word on how long clean-up will take or how long it will take the railroad to restore service to the route after rebuilding the bridge.
