CSXT Marietta, OH Bridge Collapse, Derailment Cleared

CSX Transportation inspectors five months ago found nothing wrong with the bridge that collapsed onto Virginia Street in Marietta, Ohio early Monday morning.

At approximately 01:50 EST on Monday, a 90-car CSXT loaded coal train was enroute from Parkersburg, West Virginia to AEP's Muskingum River Power Plant near Beverly, Ohio, when the bridge reportedly gave way under the train.

A total of eight loaded coal hopper cars wound up on Marietta's Virginia St. in a pile of twisted metal that included remnants of the bridge. There were luckily no injuries in the incident.

Why the bridge collapsed is still being investigated by officials. CSXT is examining a variety of components, including train handling, track inspection and other operating procedures. A thorough bridge inspection five months ago yielded no defects in the structure. It is still not known if the train derailed first and brought down the bridge or if the bridge simply collapsed beneath the weight of the train.

Clean-up was complete by Tuesday morning and Virginia Street was expected to be reopened by Tuesday afternoon. A temporary new rail bridge is being constructed at the site and should be in place in the next two weeks.

The stretch of Virginia Street where the bridge fell was damaged and will need to be repaired at CSXT's expense before it would be re-opened.
