VRE Commuter Train Derailed near Quantico, VA

A Virginia Railway Express commuter train has derailed north of Quantico, Virginia in Possum Point Thursday morning, injuring several riders.

While details are still not fully available, VRE reports that their train 304, operating as P304-05 on CSX Transportation's RF&P Subdivision, derailed one engine and the rear three cars at approximately 06:50 EST. At least four injuries were incurred in the derailment.

VRE Spokesman Mark Roeber said the cars remain upright, but they are blocking both tracks and therefore all other rail traffic has been stopped on CSXT's Fredericksburg, VA to Washington, D.C. mainline. According to VRE, trains 304, 306, 308 and 310 are canceled.

The derailment has also forced Amtrak to suspend service between D.C. and Richmond. Amtrak spokesman Cliff Black says at least one train, train 84, is being held at Fredericksburg. All the passengers on that train are being off-loaded at Fredericksburg and being bused to Washington.

Fire and EMS crews from Virginia's Prince William County EMS were on the scene.

More details about the incident are expected later this morning and today.
