BNSF, Amtrak Suffer Mudslide Delays Again in Washington

BNSF and passenger rail service was again disrupted on Monday between Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon, following a series of mudslides.

As heavy rain poured back into the region on Monday, the slide was reported at approximately 13:00 PST some eighteen miles south of Tacoma, WA.

Gus Melonas, spokesman for BNSF Railway, said Amtrak was arranging bus service to transport passengers already en route to Seattle and Portland on Monday. Tuesday's Amtrak trains were canceled, according Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.

A 48-hour precautionary closure of Amtrak service was to remain in effect until 13:00 PST Wednesday. Freight service resumed after railroad crews cleared the slide, Melonas said.
