Amtrak NEC Signal Failure Halts NYC Morning Commute

New Jersey Transit and Amtrak suspended rail service on some lines into New York City from central New Jersey because of an signal failure on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor between Elizabeth and Newark, said New Jersey Transit spokesman Dan Stessel.

All Northeast Corridor, New Jersey Coast and Raritan Valley Line services were affected.

New Jersey Transit carries about 100,000 riders daily on the Northeast Corridor between New Jersey and New York, about half of them during the morning rush hour, Stessel said.

"Tens of thousands of riders could be affected," Stessel said. He said he wasn't able to indicate when service might be restored.

The problem began when Amtrak lost power for signals about 05:00 EST, Stessel said.
