MNCR Bar Car Tradition to Continue with New Car Orders

New commuter cars for Metro-North Commuter Railroad's New Haven Line will continue a tradition set forth several decades ago.

Despite many railroad's elimination of bar cars, cars in which beverage and snack vending is available, the MNCR will place an order for more of these popular cars for late 2008 delivery. The Connecticut State Department of Transportation confirmed that while details aren't available about the new cars, they are indeed seeking a contractor to construct a yet-to-be determined number of these cars.

The New Haven Line is one of the last commuter rail lines in the country offering a designated car on evening rush-hour trains that serve an assortment of beers, mixed drinks, soft drinks, chips and other snacks.

Though Metro-North officials say bar cars generated nearly $5 million in revenue last year and $658,000 in profit, other railroads, including Metro-North's Hudson and Harlem line counterparts in New York, have phased out the service because the car's spacious bar setup took seats away from commuters.
