UP CO Derailment Disrupts Ski Train Operations

A Union Pacific derailment between Denver and Winter Park, Colorado left passengers aboard the popular Ski Train stranded on Saturday's trip.

Fifteen cars of a Union Pacific coal train left the rails near Rollinsville on Saturday and clean-up was expected to take through Sunday afternoon. There were no injuries involved with the derailment.

There were reportedly some 700 riders aboard the Ski Train, all of whom had to find alternate transportation or await the arrival of buses from Denver to continue their trip. Refunds were issued to the Ski Train passengers.

In the wake of the derailment and the expected twenty-four hour clean-up period, Amtrak detoured its California Zephyr train via Wyoming. Colorado passengers aboard the Zephyr were bused from Cheyenne to Denver and other billed locations along the normal Zephyr routing.

Amtrak was to be detoured again on Sunday, while the Ski Train was canceled for Sunday's run.
