Amtrak WA Derailment Cleared, BNSF Route Restored

BNSF Railway's Eastern Washington trackage that was damaged on Saturday morning by an Amtrak derailment was restored by Sunday, some thirty hours after the incident.

No serious injuries were reported when Amtrak's eastbound Empire Builder train number 8, enroute from Portland, Oregon to Chicago, Illinois, left the rails approximately 45 miles west of Spokane, Washington. The derailment saw one Amtrak locomotive and four cars leave the rails. Passengers aboard the train were bused to Spokane, where they reboarded an Amtrak eastbound Empire Builder train on Saturday night.

The first train to use the repaired track was an empty eastbound grain train, said Gus Melonas, spokesman for the BNSF Railway, which owns and maintains the track. Amtrak's damaged equipment was placed on a siding for evaluation and repairs before being placed back in service.
