Amtrak Cardinal Train Derailment was Without Injuries

Following up on a previously mentioned story, Amtrak's New York to Chicago Cardinal train 51 derailed two coaches early on Thursday morning in Garrison, Kentucky.

There were no injuries reported after the train's second and third coaches left the rails upright and in line. The locomotive, first coach and two other cars were unaffected by the derailment. Seventy-one passengers aboard the train were bused to various destinations along the Cardinal's route, while crews from Hulcher Wrecking Services worked to rerail the equipment.

Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari said the train was traveling at less than 10 miles an hour because a CSX Transportation dispatcher had just given the crew permission to pass a red signal at restricted speed, a common operating practice.

Preliminary reports indicated that a track defect was to blame for the derailment.
