CSXT Collision with Truck Leads to Derailment

A collision between a CSX Transportation train and a tractor-trailer truck on Monday, led to a derailment in Sullivan, Indiana.

According to police reports, a truck driver was eastbound over the Washington Street grade crossing at approximately 07:30 CST, when the low-boy style trailer, hauling a 15-ton front-end loader, became stuck on the crossing.

The driver realized that the truck was not going to be pulled free he attempted to contact local police to try and let the railroad know of his situation. Unfortunately before reaching anyone on the phone, CSX Transportation train Q515-06, enroute from Indianapolis' Avon Yard to Nashville, Tennessee, was spotted approaching the crossing.

Knowing an impact was imminent, the driver ran from his truck. The train struck the trailer and front-end loader and drug it several hundred feet before derailing the locomotives. The lead locomotive, CSXT C40-8W 7381 immediately was jack-knifed, while trailing locomotive, HLCX SD40-2 7172, stayed inline but left the rails also. The first 'few' cars of the train also derailed, with all of the equipment landing on or near the Washington Street crossing.

Luckily there were no injuries to the train crew or truck driver. The train, CSXT Q515-06 was carrying merchandise and had 37 full loads and 44 empty cars.

Wrecking crews from Hulcher Wrecking Services had been called to the scene to rerail the equipment while crews from CSXT worked to restore the damaged rail. The route was expected to be reopened by 22:00 CST Monday night.
