CSXT GA Collision with Propane Truck Could Have Been Worse

A more serious scenario was averted on Wednesday morning in Jamestown, Georgia, after CSX Transportation maintenance workers were able to notifiy an approaching train of a stalled propane tanker in its path.

CSX Transportation's Charleston, South Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia train L197-15 was approaching Church Street in Jamestown when the fast-acting maintenance crew advised of the propane truck being stranded. The train applied the emergency brake system and impacted the truck at a reduced speed from what they could have otherwise. The collision occurred at 10:25 EST and rolled the tanker over onto its side, causing a small leak from the 2,000-gallon tank.

Amazingly there were no injuries from the collision and no rail equipment derailed. An evacuation was ordered for everyone within a mile and a half radius.

Hazmat teams from across the First Coast were called in to help and determined their strategies were not feasible for the situation, so they turned to a team of experts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The experts in liquid hazardous material leaks flew in Wednesday night.
