CN Ultramar Gasoline Train Derails, Avoids Near Collision

CN Rail is reporting that a derailment has occurred this morning on its Drummondville Subdivision between Montreal and Quebec City, Quebec.

According to first-hand accounts of the incident, CN loaded Ultramar fuel train U781 was westbound on the Drummondville Sub and approaching the east end switch of the Val Alain siding at mile 40. CN intermodal train Q148 was stopped on the main awaiting the passage of the U781 at the east end Val Alain siding switch.

As the U781 started into the siding at approximately 08:30 EST, the second locomotive derailed and rolled onto its side, taking with it a total of six loaded fuel tank cars. The tank cars reportedly stayed upright and fortunately did not ignite, as the wreckage wound up just in front of the Q148's motive power. Crews from both trains luckily escaped unharmed, although apparently "shaken up".

The derailment has blocked the Drummondville Subdivision with initial estimates at possibly up to twenty-four hours. The derailment will not only affect CN freight traffic between Montreal and Quebec City, but will halt VIA Rail passenger service between the same two cities. VIA Rail is already planning on busing passengers around the wreck site.

CN Rail was still assessing the scene and crews were expected to arrive later today to begin clearing the wreckage and stabizing the damaged fuel tank cars. More information will be reported as available.
