CDOT Awards Refurbishing Contract to CT Firm

The State of Connecticut has awarded a $12 million contract to a New York-based firm to inspect and refurbish 33 passenger recently purchased rail cars, Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced Sunday.

The contract, given to Kawasaki Rail Car Inc., is for basic inspection, maintenance and repairs. The rail cars were originally purchased from the state of Virginia in October 2004 for $13.4 million as part of an effort to increase seating capacity on the Connecticut commuter rail system.

Work on the cars is expected to begin this spring and be completed in 2007.

"Commuters have waited long enough. They deserve to ride in quality and comfort. These trains will be a source of pride," Rell said.

State transportation officials said the refurbished cars will be placed into service as soon as they are completed.
