NS New York Derailment Snarled Monday Morning Motorist Commute

A seven-car derailment in Campbell Hall, New York on Monday, snarled the morning commute for motorists, as the Norfolk Southern train wound up blocking several crossings.

The 55-car train experienced and undesired emergency brake application at approximately 04:30 EST Monday morning as the train traversed the single track through Campbell Hall on its way to Suffern, New York. None of the seven cars (all of which were loaded with grain) derailed were overturned and the derailment appeared to be caused by the rail rolling onto its side beneath the weight of the loaded grain hoppers.

Campbell Hall is 57 miles north of New York City and Metro-North passenger lines were not affected.
