GO Transit Extension Proposal to Barrie, ON to be Presented

A study outlining the preliminary design and anticipated environmental effects of a project to extend the GO Transit train to Barrie, ON will be presented during a public meeting May 12 from 4 to 8pm at the Southshore Community Center.

Potential sites for a new rail station and a new layover facility will also be on review. A GO program manager says if the Ontario ministry of environment approves the plan after the environmental assessment stage, GO is coming to Barrie. But if that ministry sends it back to the drawing board, officials will have to decide whether to do the extra necessary work
or drop it.

"We're probably looking at the end of this year before we know if it's a real project," Janine Turner said. "If it goes through the environmental assessment and it's approved by the Ministry of Environment, it's a go, it's a project."
