CN Illinois Derailment Sends Residents from Homes

An early morning CN Rail derailment just north of the Du Quoin, Illinois city limits in Perry County has forced a temporary evacuation of nearly a dozen homes.

According to reports, a CN Rail train operating on the former Illinois Central Railroad territory derailed three cars, one of which was loaded with sulfuric acid. While none of the acid was leaked, a precautionary evacuation was ordered for around the derailment site and within a half-mile radius.

There were no injuries reported from the derailment and crews were on scene this morning clearing the wrecked equipment and restoring the mainline for the passage of other rail traffic.
