Amtrak Piedmont Collision with Truck in NC Halts Service

An Amtrak engineer suffered injuries to his hands Tuesday morning after the train carrying 55 passengers collided with a tractor-trailer in McLeansville, North Carolina, according to the NC Highway Patrol.

The driver of the truck, 41-year-old Mitchell Busick, escaped injury, according to Trooper Honda Martin of the Highway Patrol.

The train, Amtrak's Piedmont, was heading from Raleigh to Charlotte when it collided with the trailer portion at a private rail crossing on McLeansville Road at an estimated 70 mph, Martin said. The impact caused the trailer to wrap around the locomotive before flipping into the air as the engineer hit the emergency brakes, Martin said. The trailer was carrying landscaping material.

The trailer came to rest on one side of the tracks while the cab rested on the other side.

Busick is expected to be cited on a charge of failure to yield, Martin said. The cab of the truck and the trailer sustained a total $28,000 in damages, according to Martin.

Amtrak passengers were expected to be taken away from the scene by a charter bus.
