Union Pacific Derailment Ties Up CA Trackage Saturday

A Saturday morning derailment saw corn-loaded hopppers scattered off of Union Pacific's rails in Olivehurst, California.

The 100-car train reportedly lost at least a half-dozen cars after the hoppers left the tracks shortly after 06:00 PST. Only the conductor and engineer were on board at the time, and neither one was hurt, authorities said.

The grain shipment was on its way from Nebraska to Bakersfield, according to Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis.

The tracks remained closed for most of Saturday as workers cleaned up the mess, but they were expected to reopen by late Saturday night, Davis said.
