CSXT Richmond, VA Derailment Shuts Down Bellwood Sub

A coal train derailment early on Saturday morning in Richmond, Virginia has shut down two of three rail routes at the famous Triple Crossing location.

At approximately 06:40 EST a loaded coal train bound for Virginia Power's Hopewell, Virginia Generating Station, derailed eleven of 97 cars on elevated trackage of CSX Transportation's Bellwood Subdivision. The elevated trackage is part of a triple crossing of CSXT and Norfolk Southern lines that exist on elevated trackage in this section of Richmond.

One car fell completely on its side, dumping a huge pile of coal on the ground. A few cars behind it buckled and shifted on the tracks, sending broken wood railroad ties and metal clips flying onto the ground. Norfolk Southern tracks beneath the wreck site were also shut down by work equipment and the threat of falling rail cars.

No one was injured.

In addition to the derailed equipment, two 50-foot sections of the 1901-constructed bridge were damaged, said Gary Sease, a spokesman with railway operator CSX Corp. Crews were attempting to put the cars back on the track and fix the damaged sections, however that work may take several days to complete.

The train originated in Shelby, Ky., and was headed to a delivery site near Hopewell, Virginia Sease said.
