UPRR Friday Derailment May Have been Caused by Washout

A Union Pacific train hauling automobiles from Kansas City, Kan., to Oklahoma City derailed near Kingfisher, Oklahoma, a spokesman for the railroad said Friday.

No injuries were reported, but two locomotives and an unknown number of rail cars derailed about 05:15 CDT, said UP spokesman Mark Davis. At least one of the rail cars was burning, Davis said. "The derailment occurred about 2 miles north of Kingfisher at a culvert where the tracks may have been washed away," Davis said. "The crew said they saw water before they derailed."

Heavy rains fell in the area Thursday.

Union Pacific officials were traveling to the site Friday morning.
