BNSF-Donated Tower Comes to Life at Museum Site

Railroad enthusiasts have another reason to visit downtown Grapevine, Texas.

Interlocking Tower 16, which was brought from Sherman to Grapevine in 2001 after being donated by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, has now been renovated on the outside. It was also painted gold and brown, the same colors used by the Cotton Belt Railroad for the Grapevine Depot, which the city of Grapevine now maintains and uses as a museum.

The railroad switching tower was built in 1903 and continued to be used until the 1990s when computers took over tracking trains and switching tracks.

The last interlocking tower in Texas to be operated was Interlocking Tower 17 in Rosenberg, near Houston. It ceased operations in January 2003.
