CN Maritime Derailment Disrupts Operations, VIA Rail

Another Maritime Canada derailment has disrupted Canadian National service, this time in Padoue, New Brunswick, on the New Brunswick East Coast Railway's Mont Joli Subdivision.

Canadian National train M40361-05 experienced an undesired emergency brake application while traversing the NBEC on trackage rights. Inspection of the train determined that at least twenty-three cars have derailed, completely blocking the line and VIA Rail's Ocean trains.

This is the second time in as many months that the main corridor between Montreal and Halifax has been blocked by a derailment and for VIA, another round of headaches to move passengers around the wreck site.

Following the derailment, CN and VIA Rail devised a detour for a stranded train P01410-05, the eastbound Ocean, that will be taking the train over the Pelletier and Napadogan Subdivisions this morning. The train is estimated to arrive in Edmundston at 12:30 EDT (13:30 ADT).

Other CN detours are being arranged, with other compatible routes available for such moves.
