CN Calls Upon Riot Police to Reopen Access to Rail Yard

Montreal riot police were called to open up access to a Canadian National Railway trainyard on Friday as striking CN workers picketed the entrance.

CN spokesman Mark Hallman said 50 to 60 workers had tried to prevent trucks from entering and leaving the Montreal terminal, and CN police contacted municipal police after the workers blocked a city street. He said there was no violence and truck traffic resumed at the site.

A spokesman for the Canadian Auto Workers said the union is filing a complaint after two female pickets were "pushed around" by riot police the day before at the same site.

Abe Rosner said contract talks had not yet resumed to try to resolve the legal strike that began Feb. 20.

Some CN trains are being slowed as managers try to cope with the strike by 5,000 clerical, customer service and trainyard employees, almost a third of CN's Canadian workforce.
