Amtrak Confident in Protective Measures for US Passengers

Amtrak officials said Friday that despite the Spain bombings, there is no specific threat against U.S. railroads.

Policies will stay the same, though a "ramped up police presence" may be seen in rail lines and stations across the country, said Amtrak spokeswoman Marcie Golgoski.

Additional protective measures have been put in place, but Amtrak officials said they wouldn't discuss them. Amtrak employees will also be "on alert to be vigilant and report unusual activity to Amtrak police," a release from the company said.

When passengers purchase Amtrak tickets, they must show a photo ID, Golgoski said. She said that ID's might be checked on a random basis on the train.

Hines, who came to the Peninsula to visit friends, said he didn't see any new security measures during the ride. And his mom works for the Amtrak and he rides them all the time.

Other Amtrak passengers that got off in Newport News said they didn't see any obvious security measures either.

Maryland resident Tia Woodard is visiting family in Newport News this weekend. She bought her ticket online, and did not have to show photo ID at any point in the process.

She didn't know about the attacks in Spain until she got off the train and saw a newspaper stand. But if she had known, it wouldn't have prevented her from taking the trip, she said.

"I'm not the nervous type," she said. "I wasn't afraid to fly after the terrorist attacks."
