4014 on the KP: Visited Turf
Author: mg8711

For the second day of UP 4014's voyage on the KP last month it would pass through mostly territory I had visited before, but only once, at least until west of Bunker Hill. (https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4692426,4692429#msg-4692429). After that I was on my own, I'd never chased trains west of there.

1-2) First shots of the day are had east of Carneiro, KS at a location known as Nine Mile Hill. While I had been right by this spot before, I didn't know this shot existed, and right off of Kansas Highway 140 so a thanks to "santafe199" is due for pointing it out to me.
3) Shot 2 was my favorite shot of the day, so what's better to follow than my least favorite shot of the day? UP 4014 ducks under Kansas Highway 156, sailing into Ellsworth for its first service stop of the day.

4-6) The crew on the 4014 was told by the dispatcher that there was a bulletin to run a baretable train around them at Wolf (Black Wolf on a state map), and given a track warrant accordingly. It wasn't just a baretable, but the IDIHAR-19, going into storage at Hackberry, KS, the first siding west of Oakley. Here is a sequence of the 4014 easing down the main, and UP 6884 with its empties out of Dallas running through the siding around them. In shot 6, Ed Dickens is seen rewriting the "BIG BOY" chalk lettering as the 6884 gets a steam bath.

With this being dark TWC territory with occasional CTC siding islands, the 6884 was going to have to put some mileage behind it before the 4014 would get back on the move. So a short chase of the 6884 and its super boring train ensued.
7) "That's not a Big Boy!!" exclaims the child in the back of the truck at right as the 6884 passes over Old US 40.
8) The 6884 passing over one of the many trestles on the Central Kansas portion of the KP east of Wilson.
9) West of Wilson I parted ways with the 6884 at a lonely crossing.

10-11) UP 4014 blasts through Wilson proper, drawing the attention from old, young, and everybody in between at right.
12) The 4014 rounds a sweeping curve east of Russell. Goofy compositon and all.

13) UP 4014 is working right along at track speed out of Gorham. This would be the last shot of the day of the Big Boy except for.
14-15) Some night shots at Hays. Another thanks to 199, he let me use his tripod for these shots..

After this it was off to Walmart for a memory card, and Quality Inn for some sleep. The next day the barren dead landscape would be a winter wonderland...

Nice collection Lucas. I really like the curve east of Russell (no. 12). During my many trips along I-70, I had the good fortune to see trains on that curve several times.

Nice work, pal! I love the bare-table train breaking through the "steam wall" in the run-around shot at Wolf...

Hauling freight, or just for extra braking? The ghost of the Portland Rose?

Thanks y’all for the kind words!
The hoppers were both for extra braking and “photo op” potential I’ve been told.
