Compression of Posted Images on Trainorders
Author: schmo

Is it my imagination, or is Trainorders now compressing the images we upload onto the site? Sure looks like it from the degradation in image quality at times (and the smaller resulting file size). O well, guess they need to conserve server space. :)

It seems to me that after the upgrade that images are no longer being compressed?

We have always compressed images on the site. Until last Sunday we used a program named Imagemagick which in my opinion gave horrible results. With this upgrade we switched to the "GD" library in PHP which does a much better job with fewer artifacts. That was one of the big new features of this upgrade was dumping Imagemagick.

Quality of the photo is excellent. I don't see any degradation.

No external (Trainorders) compression in this case, image was the same size as I posted! On the other compression prgram, a 240kb picture would get squished another bit to 120-150kb.

It's an odd picture, really why I love digital. I didn't think the shot would work and I was using my little $40 Fuji 1.4 Megapixel digital, but the light was good, and so I fired away! Turned out pretty good and made a nice test picture with the complexity...
