Winter is not far from Marias Pass
Author: eburli

A ride towards Marias Pass today revealed that winter is not far away. The attacehd photos are:

1. An empty grain train below Little Dog Mtn.
2. A stack train about to pass under Hwy 2 West of Paola.
3. Essex helpers on the way down to Essex to grab a stack train.

How expensive is property up that way, or has Ted Turner bought-up the entire state? I really like that country around Glacier, especially for watching railroading at its best.

No, Ted's not the major property owner in this state--your Uncle Sam and the railroad own a big chunk of it. My wife owns a piece in the middle of Glacier Park and if you think you've heard stories of obnoxious neighbors, you haven't lived until you own property landlocked by the National Park Service.

You can buy a house at Essex for a song...

The trees in photo two are Larch, also called Tamarak. The needles will be changing to yellow soon.
Sorry, Dave, but Ted is one of the largest private land owners in the State of Montana. He owns lots of land near Townsend and Manhattan which is closed to the public even if the road is supposed to stay open for acces to Forest Service land behind it.
Spend a winter at Essex before you decide to buy in. You may not like it all that much after all.
