Ogden changes

Ogden yard is changing with the construction of UTA's Frontrunner commuter rail. The new line parallels UP's line between Salt Lake City and Ogden along the east side of UP's tracks. Coming into Ogden from the west, the UTA line is on the south of UP's tracks at Bridge Junction and crosses over both the Weber River and UP's tracks on a flyover to get to Ogden's Union Station.

1) Looking south at UP's Ogden wye with the new UTA fill being the fresh earth in the middle. The fill is between the two crossings, and is wide enough for future expansion from single track to double track. The site was where UP's Ogden roundhouse was until torn down in the early 1970s.

2) The south crossing over UP's tracks at Bridge Junction. At upper right is the bridge over the Weber River. At lower right is UP's Shasta Track.

3) UP and UTA will share UP's Ogden Sub north of Ogden, at lower left. The track heading to lower right is the former SP line crossing Great Salt Lake, and the crossover between the two is known as Cecil Junction. At right center is the former D&RGW Ogden yard.

One more, showing the flyover crossing of Weber River.

All photos taken on September 8, 2006.

One last thing. This coming Friday, November 3, UTA will mark as "Half Done", with Frontrunner construction being 50 percent completed. Watch your local papers for where and when the ceremony will take place. Just in time for a ballot on sales tax changes to fund more UTA light rail construction in Salt Lake Valley.

Thanks for sharing these unique photos, I enjoy seeing railroad expansion projects, both from the freight railroads and commuter operations.
