Calif railfans - request please
Author: iliketrains

As you are out railfanning, could you take photos of welcome signs at various cities/communities ON CALIFORNIA STATE HIGHWAY operated by Caltrans only - example: "Welcome to Smithville, Home of the State Frog Contest" or a simple "Welcome to Smithville" - these need to be permanent signs, and need to be in the State Right-of-way. These will be a non-standard sign - something produced by the locals to identify their community. Could you please send photos to me in a private message.

Many thanks in advance.

Too funny about Bolinas. I used to deliver there for FedEx and we always had fun trying to find addresses when the locals take down all of the street signs and don't have numbers on their houses. Can you say "Hippieville?

I need examples to show the local Caltrans people of where and how community signs have been installed.

The sign foamer idea still has me laughing.

I have stumbled across websites of what I'll call 'highway heads'. Some are roadway-related, some are sign oriented. And yes, there is the highway equivalent of rare mileage collectors. I found it interesting to do a slow 'zoom-over' that subculture one evening. BTW, a member of the American Theater Organ Society told me that there is a fair bit of crossover between the theater organ fans and rail fans.

There's a few websites related to road history including famous intersections, development of road signs in California etc. They coined the phrase 'Road-geekery'.

They probably smoke more pot in Bolinas than the all of Marin County combined.

If Bolinas had a major brush fire, the entire Bay Area would have a proximity buzz from the pot smoke. Lots of tweekers out there too...

"Lorenzo" makes that claim:

Well, Lorenzo--that MAY or MAY NOT be true....
BUT, "Electric traction" buffs (streetcars, interurbans, electric railways) definitely and positively are "theatre pipe organ enthusiasts" .. The TWO things just naturally are related to each other some how. Most of the ERA (Electric Railroader's Assn) are pipe organ fans..
From "George Krambles" in the EAST, to "Ira Swett" in the WEST-- pipe organs are IN...

Years ago, when attending my first railfan meetings with BAERA/WRM members either at the Hotel Shattuck in Berkeley or at the late Dick Reynolds home on at 1501-Fernside in Alameda, CA., they movies that were shown were usually accompanied by pipe organ music.. The same with the THREE Pacific Electric videos put out by CAtenary Video Productions...

That's my take on the subject, anyway!!
