Klamath Northern Gets a new Diesel & WHY!!
Author: LOGGERHOGGER

Visitors to the Klamath Northern out of Gilchrist, OR will be surprised to see GP-38 #2002 from the Albany-Eastern running on this line usually home to the KN 75-ton GE center-cab #207.
Last month during a daily inspection, the cres discovered a SERIOUS wheel-crack in one of the drive wheels to the GE. (See photo- OUCH!!). A call was quickly made to Rick Franklin who operates the Albany Eastern for a loaner diesel. Rick quickly obliged and sent AE #2002 down to Gilcrist. SInce the UP Natron Cut-Off main line is still severed due to the huge slide at Frazzier, OR (Rick is the prime contractor on that repair) the unit had to be routed down through Bend on the Oregon Trunk.
Here we see the #2002 in service on the KN on March 10, 2008.

Ought to rename #207 "The Liberty Bell"....

Curious if the interchange has changed? The Klamath Northern would leave the cars at Mowich but how do the cars get into the Mainline Stream now that the Chemult to Eugene section is interrupted? The previous owners ran a Mowich Local from KF, is that still going on, or what happens now?

From what I've seen/heard usually the MRVPD/QPDRV works the interchange to pick up and set out. Not sure what they are doing right now with the Frazier slide blocking the Cascade sub. Maybe a local or work train picks it up, but that is just a guess.

I bet they wont have to double there little hill anymore with that "big" unit. That must pull like a dream in comparison to the 70 ton.

I wouldn't be surprised to find the KN taking there outbounds all the way into Chemult for interchange and bringing their empties back as well. Other than the work trains, it's not like the Cascade main is overrun with traffic.

This must be "the hill," which would be unnecessary if the highway could have been designed to go over the top instead of the track.

The 70 tonner went to the Modesto Empire and Traction several years ago. IIRC, it is one that got crunched in an accident last year and is slated for scrap.

Reply: No, just a spot of moisture on lens from rain and gusty wind that day. Sorry, the only photo I have.
