A couple of days on Curtis Hill
Author: BNSFDS

Since I'm on vacation this week, I decided a trip to northwest Oklahoma to railfan the Transcon on Curtis Hill has in order. Myself and fellow BNSF DS Homer arrived in the area early Wednesday afternoon.

Most of the traffic was eastbound which didn't lend itself to good photography but I was able to get a couple of shots.

1. BNSF train Z-WSPSBD8-12A climbing the 1 percent 13 mile long Curtis Hill near Heman, OK.

2. BNSF train Z-LACKCK9-12L shuttling power east towards K.C. near Heman, OK.

We woke up on Thursday morning with dense fog but there were signs of the sun burning through to clouds. After checking out of the motel and gassing up the Santa Fe, we headed trackside.

3. DP units shoving on the rear of BNSF train S-LPCLGB1-13A at Woodward, OK.

After the stack train cleared, the skys did not. Clouds thickened back up and blanketed the area most of the day. Discouraged, we pressed on.

4. BNSF train Z-LACATG1-12A rushing it's high priority freight down the hill between Heman and
Belva, OK.

5. BNSF train Z-PHXWSP9-12L following close behind the previous Z train between Heman and Belva, OK.

6. BNSF train S-LBLCHI4-13A rounding the curve in front of several of rock outcropings near Heman, OK

7. BNSF train H-KCKBAR8-14A digging into the grade just west of Heman, OK.

8. Another shot of the new gensets heading to the San Diego & Imperial Valley Railroad.

9. BNSF local freight L-KAN0361-14T passing the former west end of the siding at Quinlan, OK with
one of the blue GP38's leading the way.

10. BNSF hotshot Z-LACWSP9-13L (train 891 to all the old Santa Fe heads) rounding the curve at the
former east end of the siding at Quinlan, OK.

11. BNSF warbonnet 676 leading train M-AMSKCK1-14A passed the restored Harvey House at Waynoka, OK.

12. BNSF train Q-CLOLPC1-14A passing the restored Harvey House and Santa Fe depot at Waynoka, OK as
the sun tries to peak out again.

After the Q passed, the sun did indeed come out and it dried up all the trains. The next train wouldn't be through the area until after dark so we headed back to Fort Worth. Despite it being cloudy most of Thursday, I still had a fun trip.

Enjoy

Having worked the Cajon Sub. and the Seligman Sub., I have been flashed many times, most of the time by people that you wouldn't want to be flashed by! I hope your flashing in Woodward was better than most of my experiences!

Flashed -or- mooned? (probably both)

It was a nice sight while going by at 50, though I don't even wanna guess how young those girls were...

I worked out of Lincoln for five months last year and never got flashed once in that college town, I was kind of disappointed!

Have only been there once. That was when it was single track. Love that place and that red soil.
