Wreck... Where was it?
Author: ddg

I myself don't know where this happened. I fly Powered Parachutes, and someone who knew I was a railroader took this picture from his PPC and sent it to me. He flew over the wreck and took a couple of pictures of it. I think it was on the UP in Illinois, and It happened three or four years ago at least. Looks nasty whereever it was.

Near Clinton Iowa as I recall--or some where on the old CNW main east of clinton.

This is Galt, IL, few miles west of Sterling. US 30 bridges over the ex-CNW just west of here at Agnew. This wreck resulted in detours all over the place including over the IC&E from Chicago to Clinton and a few even ran on the IAIS between Peoria and Des Moines.

Whats the scoop on this? Looks like the bridge gave way while the train was crossing?

Trainboy is correct, Galt, IL. Oh yes, they had it back
in service in a week.

The derailment occured on May 4, 2005. The detour I shot on the IAIS occured on May 5. As I recall, the train derailed while passing through the bridge resulting in its collapse.

Wreck: What Do They Salvage?
Author: WichitaJct

What do they do in case like this? Much of that lumber is obviously salvageable. Do they try to salvage anything or just scoop all it up and haul it off in the interest of restoring service as soon as possible?

They don't care about anything except to open the tracks

There was a derailment on the BNSF Brookfield sub several decades ago, and one boxcar involved was loaded with consumer goods. At least back in those times and that case, they wrote the entire shipment off as a loss and disposed of it in the most cost effective way. And that is why everybody in Hunnewell, Missouri (population 227 now, much lower back then) was wearing Buster Brown shoes exclusively for many, many years.

A Totally different situation, but in early 1987, the fledgling Indiana Rail Road had their first derailment as a company. A broken rail caused a pileup of loaded coal hoppers and loaded lumber flats. In order to try to stem the loss and reduce the burden on their brand new insurance carrier, INRD sent out crews and they sorted and re stacked the spilled lumber and sent it to the customer. That would NEVER happen on a class one railroad, and I seriously doubt it would happen on the modern INRD either, especially with a unionized workforce. The material would be written off as a loss and probably ordered destroyed so it wouldn't fall into public hands. When I was in tech school in the mid 80's we had some GM vans that had rode out a derailment. GM loaned the college the vehicles, but the had to sign an agreement that the vehicles could not be parted out, and when they were done with them, they had to crushed and it had to be documented by the salvage company. The damaged bodies were cut off and we used the running chassis to practice auto repair on. We also had some pilot production 1988 Chevy pickups that were produced at the local GM plant. That was a brand new model truck being built in a brand new plant. I thought it was cool to tinker around with a couple of the very first trucks of that model ever built, and the very first ones ever produced by Fort Wayne Assembly. I got chewed out royally by the automotive department head for doing a long smokey burnout with 350 5 speed C1500 in the college parking lot.

Contrary to all the stories about spilled freight at a derailment, the rail carrier cannot sell or even give the goods away
since they are still the property of the shipper. Sometimes the shipper will abandon the goods to the railroad but until the owner of the product agrees, it is still his merchandise, and is only in the care of the railroad.

When I worked for Santa Fe I watched as three multi-level loads of brand new full size Ford and Mercury products, which appeared
undamaged but had been in a derailment, were unloaded from the destroyed railcars with a grapple, then crushed and baled.
That was really sickening because I could afford a new auto at the time....

Nothing quite like the massive waste we create in the U.S. ... Another example: "Cash For Clunkers", lots and lots of them were far from "clunkers". Made me sick!

I believe the original was:
Here's my dog Tige,
he lives in a shoe,
I'm Buster Brown,
Look for me in there too!

(I'm a lot older than you)

Frank, in Tennessee
