Is this Real?
Author: mhall

I this a real photo? I had it emailed to me and I'm not sure, a location would be great. Thanks for any information.

Well, it looks real enough, especially with the fire hose in the foreground running along the rails. I know back in 2004 when a forest fire was raging near Colfax, CA on Donner Pass, the forest service firefighters had hose strewn all along the track. They were even thoughtful enough to run the hose under the rails rather than over ... :)

given the lack of urgency I would say it is a big burnout or backfire...

I don't know.... The flames don't look right, this smacks of "Photoshop" to me!!
I remember being told, "Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see"
But now with the advent of Photoshop and all the other photo manipulating programs out there,
I don't believe ANYTHING I see!!!

I think it is probably real. A telephoto lens will compress things to make them look much more exaggerated than they would appear if you were just standing there and looking at it. Those flames are probably a lot further away than they look. There seems to be too much detail intertwined to have been Photoshopped, unless someone had a ton of time.

But if you tell me the photo was taken by Robin Williams, and the highrailer is being driven by George Carlin, and you attach the story of the incident as told by Andy Rooney, THEN I would have serious doubts.
(Their names get attached to anything and everything.)

One of those firefighters looks like Hosni Mubarak.

As a retired Firefighter I would say yes. The guys look to be waiting for orders, probably to get out. If the wind is blowing in their direction they will be leaving soon. I was on a number of fires like this and sometimes you are just standing around waiting to orders. Notice the dry dead material on each side ready to burn. I think this is real, only because I have seen this. The hose is not charged, indicating they are trying to make a decision. However, putting the wet stuff on the red stuff would do little good in this picture. Maybe they are waiting on an air drop, and then they could begin to do some good. Interesting to say the least.
