That would have been EMDX 9096, an SD60 model formerly leased by Oakway Corporation as part of GM's Lease Fleet. These units succumbed to the 2-year economic recession that hit the US in 2009 and 2010 and were all returned to their owner. Many units have been sold off now to other RRs and leasing organizations. When was this photo taken? and where? Looks like the Route 66 crossing east of Ludlow, CA.

NS has a whole slew of these in lease service, I'm thinking at least 50, if not 100 of them. In fact I saw a couple yesterday while out railfanning.

I believe Chris Toth maintains a list of units on lease to Norfolk Southern that showed the ex-Oakways in such service number less than 50, but there are a bunch and they're everywhere.

Edited to add: And here's a link to a recent post by Chris:

The 9096 is NOT listed as being on lease to NS, so somebody else must have dug it out of whatever storage line it was in.

I saw two in Gibson Yard in Omaha this past Thursday, along with a NS unit, but they were tucked back in
behind the yard office and quite a few cars (I didn't get the numbers).

Actually, it was just EMD 9096, there was never an X after EMD on the former Oakway units. I believe if the road number is only 3 digits then it gets the X, but 4 digits just get EMD. There are still about 48 of the original 100 stored in Creston, IA.

It is one of the ones stored at Creston, Iowa; maybe business has picked up enough for BNSF to lease them again.

Hum, I thought they used to show up on the BNSF computers as EMDX, could be wrong though.

Thanks all for the help in identifying this unit. To answer a question in return; the photo was taken at Goff's/Route 66 crossing on my annual Bday trek to the Needles Sub November 29 2009

Yes, BNSF paperwork always showed the units as EMDX. As short of power as BNSF is right now, I wouldn't be surprised that they leased the remaining Oakway SD60's.

They're GMTX now, Ted.

Regardless of how it shows in a railroad's computer, it's got to have that "X" in the actual reporting mark, per AAR protocol.

Isn't the AAR rule that if you are not a real railroad, you have to use a "X"?

Wow, I'm looking at the computer now, and there is no "X" on the reporting marks for the ex-Oakways. Every one I ever had in my consist ever since the change from Oakway had the blue card reading just plain EMD! But what do I know, I just work here and actually worked trains with these in the consist. I keep forgetting that all the foamers know more! They never had the "X" on any of my paperwork! I guess all the track and time I copied and all the GTB's and track warrants were incorrect when they were referred to as "EMD 90XX". But again, I just work here, what do I know?

When they were Oakways the reporting marks were OWY 90XX, Oakway wasn't a real railroad. However, I still see a three letter pattern here.

I think one or two of the other posters are railroad employees also, and one is a BNSF employee. You need to relax, its only trains!

Okay, Thanks! Just trying to correct bad information. I know how everyone on TO is very relaxed and non judgemental when it comes to bad information-my bad!
