Western Railroad Discussion > UP 1989 Special zipping through Kirkwood Station, St. L

Decided to visit Kirkwood Station for some railfanning today. I could tell something was up the minute I got out of my car as the railfain activity was unusually high for a Friday. No sooner got my gear out of the vehicle when I was informed that UP would be running a w/b special today and it would be passing Kirkwood in 40 minutes.

Little did I know what I was in store for. Luckily the forecasted rain and thunderstorms held off for the event. A bit overcast for the roll by, but I'm not complaining given my good fortune to just happen to be at Kirkwood at just the right time.

Met a lot of fellow railfans for the first time today, to include a fellow TO member

Yes, Kirkwood, MO is a quiet zone. Last summer the city placed concrete dividers at all UP street crossing.

The last car is a theater car, fairly common for many years on several RRs. The seats face to the rear and are tiered so everyone has a good view. I've ridden them on CSX and BNSF...

Could you or anybody else from the area, please post some pictures of these concrete dividers? How do they obviate the necessity for whistles at crossings?
